The Sabbath: A Sanctuary in Time

From the beginning the Sabbath has been a regular, cyclical day of rest, worship, refreshment, and blessing. It is celebrated on the seventh day of the week, from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. It commemorates when God rested on the seventh day from all the work He did in creation.

The Sabbath is the first thing God set apart as holy.

(Genesis 2:2,3)

I liken the Sabbath to a sanctuary in time. It is a holy place where God is present, and we can move from the common part of our week to the sacred time. God communicates the importance of rest, and in so doing we need to guard it. The Sabbath is also one of the Ten Commandments.

Yeshua (Jesus) is depicted in the flame of the candle, because He is the Light of the World. He said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27).

It is not meant to be a burden but a blessing. God’s perpetual invitation to enjoy coming to Him for true rest and restoration is available.
