The Lens by which we see
I believe the Lord stirred me to create this piece based on the common quote, “Nothing is ever what it seems”. This piece was physically and emotionally difficult to execute.
With mountains of fake news and alternate facts today, this subject is quite relevant. Everyone is a self-professed authority or influencer. We all believe that we see things for what they are. We make decisions based on our emotions, not facts. We select facts to confirm our opinions and ignore those that contradict our conclusions.
We don’t really listen to people as much as we emotionally talk past those with differing views on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The story began in Genesis 3:5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” The enemy is truly the one who has lied from the beginning and has changed our perspective on God.
However, “When we view ourselves through the lens of God’s Word, we better understand God’s love for us and the worth we have in His eyes.” Elizabeth George.
Our personal lens is shaped by time, our background, and media. I depicted different lenses throughout time.
Become more aware of the lenses you are applying to the world around you. It can be difficult for people to change their minds. Social media platforms are a venue for connection but all too often they become addictive, excessive, and can leave one feeling empty. What is behind all the smiles? The filter that looks like we have it all together.
But who or what do we turn to, to correct our vision? When we can’t physically see well, we go to the doctor. We need to go to the word of God to get the proper perspective and lens in life. Everyone cannot do what is right in their own eyes.
Ask the Lord to “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” (Psalm 119:37)
