It is the mouth that provides humans the power to speak and elevates them above the animals. People need wisdom to learn when it’s appropriate to speak and when to remain silent. That is why the Ayin (eye) comes before the Pey (mouth).
The Ayin (eye) gives insight, however the Pey (mouth) gives that insight expression.
Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” The good mouth is seen in Psalm 19:14/Psalm 37:30/Deut. 30:14, and the bad mouth is seen in Psalm 10:7/Prov. 18:6,7/James 3:5,6,8,9. That is why it is so important to ask the Lord to “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” Psalm 141:3.
The mouth makes it possible to fulfill the ultimate purpose of creation. With our mouth we can pray and praise the LORD. Psalm 51:15 says, “O LORD, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.” (See 1Thess. 5:16-18).
Jesus is the Word of God. Psalm 33:6 says, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.” We can use our mouth as the Apostle Paul says in Romans 10:8,9, “But what does it say? ‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, [Deut.30:14] (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
